Australia leaves Afghans hanging
Australia leaves Afghans hanging

The Australian Government has failed the people who have supported us when we invaded their lands to fight a fight that was not our doing. With the war on terror now coming to an end, one which saw no women's rights be given only to be taken away once the media stops covering the ongoing story. We hear of a family who was told by the Australian government that they must send their VISAs by post.

It leaves me to wonder WFT, why in this day and age with all the shooting and the current developments happening in Afghanistan. Are the Australian government not helping the people and families that helped us invade and communicate with the locals?

Why are we leaving on Aug 31, 2021 with little ways to support the people that will be left behind? Why are we standing by and letting the Taliban take over this country? Why because it’s easier to pull out than to keep fighting for the rights of the people that Australian soldiers went to help.

We may have been there to fight the war on terror, to kill Osama bin Laden, but over the 20 years that's 7253 days. We created hope, we gave women and children the right to go to school, to have a job, to do what they wanted to. We gave them what every American and Australian woman has freedom, only for it to be taken away, when times got too tough.

This story is about Nasir — who only wants to be identified by his last name. Nasir served as an interpreter for ADF soldiers based near Tarin Kot between 2009 and 2013 and has since resettled in Australia.

Lawyers for Nasir said the Australian authorities required his family to send their visa documents in the post. With the family finding that impossible because of the current situation in Kabul, Afghanistan. The family has turned to the United States of America (the land of the free) for support and help, and even with limited documents, US soldiers were willing to put them on an evacuation flight.

"The Americans were aware that these people were the family of an Australian interpreter and they agreed to evacuate them as they had a feeling they were in danger," Nasir told the ABC Australia

Nasir’s extended family who were also evacuated by the US were a member of an AFL interpreter killed in the line of duty.

But as we have seen to many times Australian Government failures, we are witnessing another systematic problem. When you help us, Australia turns our back on you.
